A cricket bat is a simple-looking product with a long production chain. Understanding the chain helps a buyer specify the right thing rather than only asking for a grade.
Willow selection
English willow and Kashmir willow behave differently and sit at different price points. Grain count, straightness and blemishes all feed into grading.
Pressing
Pressing compresses the face so the bat performs without breaking early. Under-pressing gives a soft bat; over-pressing kills the rebound. This step does more for performance than almost anything else.
Shaping and profile
Edge thickness, spine height, bow and concaving decide pick-up and balance. This is the part most worth specifying if you are building your own range.
Handle and finishing
Cane handles with rubber insertions are fitted, bound and gripped. Finishing covers sanding, face protection, stickers and the toe guard.
What to specify as a buyer
Willow type and grade, size run, weight band, profile, handle type, grip colour, sticker artwork and packing. That list is enough for a manufacturer to quote accurately.
